Some 30 residential buildings will be torn down in Albion and Emmett Township beginning this week.
The demolitions are partly funded by a $353,650 grant the Calhoun County Treasurer and county Land Bank Authority received from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. The grant’s required 25 percent local match came from the land bank, county treasurer, city of Albion and Emmett Township.
Demolition began this week on 12 buildings in Albion and two in Emmett. Nineteen more are scheduled through the end of the year, according to a news release.
“Eliminating blight remains one of our top priorities to improve local neighborhoods, promote public safety and protect home values,” Treasurer Christine Schauer said in the release. “Working with the city of Albion and Emmett Charter Township, we are targeting blighted buildings that will make the biggest impact in local neighborhoods.”
