More than 100 blighted homes are set to be demolished under a grant awarded last year to the Calhoun County Land Bank Authority.
The properties — located in Battle Creek, Albion and Emmett and Bedford Townships — will be torn down using funding from the Hardest Hit Blight Program, according to a news release.
Eighty-eight of the homes are in Battle Creek; 27 are in Albion; five are in Emmett; and two are in Bedford.
Officials also plan to demolish homes in Homer Village and other area townships when funding becomes available.
“Demolishing a house isn’t always the goal of the Calhoun County Land Bank, however many of the houses slated for demolition are in disrepair, structurally unsound and dangerous,” land bank board Chairman and county Treasurer Brian Wensauer said in a statement. “They are magnets for crime, eyesores for neighbors and detract from the quality of life and property values of neighborhoods in Calhoun County.”
