Some of the recent improvements in Battle Creek neighborhoods can be traced back to property demolitions, county and city officials said.
Some 80 properties have been torn down within city limits between 2014 and 2016, according to data from the Calhoun County Land Bank Authority. The land bank partners with the city of Battle Creek and other municipalities to win grant funding to pay for demolitions.
During that time, Battle Creek neighborhoods have improved for the third consecutive year. Among the indicators used by the city to determine neighborhood health is code violations, property values and home sales.
Officials say they’re hopeful neighborhood stability will continue into the next decade. Other alternatives beyond demolition, such as rehabilitation, are being considered.
